Aerosol and Particle Technology Laboratory - Engine Test Cell

Engine Test Cell

The evaluation of porous media, catalytic reactors and novel catalytic materials in the area of automotive emission control, is carried out in the Lab's engine test cell, where a Diesel engine is coupled to a hydraulic brake (Superflow™ dynamometer) allowing the operation of the engine over its entire engine map in terms of speed and load.

Full or small-scale emission control components (e.g. Catalyzed Diesel Particulate Filters, Diesel Oxidation Catalysts, NOx reduction systems) can be assessed in the engine test cell. For the assessment of full-scale components the entire engine exhaust flow is used.

The engine exhaust system is able to host several components of different dimensions. Special built exhaust modules for particle and gas sampling are placed upstream and downstream of the systems under evaluation. The system has the capability to by-pass the exhaust flow at the beginning of the test to allow the engine to reach steady state operation conditions. It also incorporates the necessary pressure and temperature sensors as well as a hydrocarbon port injection system for emission control system regeneration purposes.

In case of small-scale components an array of experimental setups is employed for the controlled exposure of them in part of the diesel engine exhaust. The test cell is quipped with an array of exhaust gas and particle analyzers for the measurement of the regulated (CO, HCs, NO, NO2, CO2) and unregulated (NH3, N2O, SO2, Benzene, Toluene, Formadehyde, etc) gas emissions as well as the soot particle concentration, size distribution and composition.

Finally, the engine test cell is also employed for the controlled exposure of cell lines directly to the exhaust of the engine for toxicity evaluation tests.
